Students enrolled in Winthrop STEM Elementary Magnet School can build on their elementary knowledge at the STEM Magnet Middle School and complete their specialized focus at STMHS.

STEM Education

  • Featuring extensive after school programming that includes a unique partnership with New England Science and Sailing (NESS) where all STEM students will learn to sail, kayak, snorkel and explore marine sciences at locations in Stonington and Ocean Beach Park
  • All students attending SMMS will have the opportunity to participate in the BDJMS electives: art, band, chorus, Spanish and technology

STEM Education is an approach to teaching and learning that integrates the content and skills of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). SMMS enables children in grades 6-8 to engage in rigorous tasks by examining and solving real world problems. Students are immersed in authentic, interactive, investigations that encourage their curiosity and motivate them to learn how the world works. Our school's instructional practices provide rich hands-on learning experiences for all learners. Students who complete our grade 6-8 at SMMS will attend the Science and Technology Magnet High School of Southeastern Connecticut located at New London High School.



The goal of STEM math is to explore the connections between the world around them and the world of mathematics. The STEM students will take the skills and understandings that they have already learned, discover new ways to apply these skills, and use them as building blocks to the next level of complexity and understanding. The STEM students will show their understanding by analyzing problems, gathering the necessary information, evaluating the best method for resolving the problem, and by implementing the solution successfully.   They will learn more than just to give the right answer to a question; they will learn how to understand the solution so that they can apply their skills to new, unfamiliar problems down the road.



In science, our students will develop STEM practices which include asking questions, collaboration, developing and using models, and planning and carrying out investigations.  Students will also analyze and interpret data, construct explanations, engage in arguments from evidence, and communicate information.  Our STEM students will integrate the content and skills of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to be challenged and to apply their knowledge and skills to respond to complex everyday problems that will prepare them for the 21st century workforce.



Language Arts
Our goals are to provide students with the opportunities to explore new learning, elaborate on skills previously taught, communicate ideas, and show comprehension of materials through responses, vocabulary, and writing skills. STEM students will accomplish these goals by integrating themes from science in our class discussions, comprehension of nonfiction text, and presentations.  We will also be using various forms of technology and media to produce and publish writing pieces. Through STEM, we will explore our world and contribute to our learning environment.


Soc Stu

The goal of STEM Social Studies is to form an appreciation of civilizations and to foster skills that promote citizenship and lifelong learning in all students.  Students will develop chronological perspectives about the development of communities and civilizations.  Additionally, students will integrate science, technology, engineering, and math skills into their interdisciplinary projects based on real world case studies. 


Project Lead The Way (PLTW) offers a different approach to learning and teaching. Through activity, project, and problem-based curriculum, PLTW gives our students a change to apply what they know, identify problems, find unique solutions, and lead their own learning. This develops and encourages students' continued excitement in STEM through topics like coding and robotics, flight and space, and DNA and crime scene analysis, middle school students engage their natural curiosity and imagination in creative problem solving. PLTW is a strong foundation for further STEM learning in high school and beyond, challenging students to solve real-world challenges, such as cleaning oil spills and designing sustainable housing solutions. Using the same advanced software and tools as those used by the world's leading companies, students learn how to apply math, science, technology and engineering to their everyday lives. 


The Connecticut Invention Convention (CIC) is an award winning, internationally recognized educational organization started in 1983 as part of the Connecticut Educators Network for the Talented and Gifted. The program is open to K-8 students statewide, and is designed to develop, encourage, and enhance critical thinking skills through invention, innovation and entrepreneurship. Invention provides students with a unique means to discover new skill sets and creatively apply these in real-life settings while nurturing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).  The Invention Convention curriculum is standards-based and enables students to research, analyze and effectively focus on and solve their real-life problems. The annual convention also gives many students and parents an introduction to careers in engineering with exhibits staffed by UConn's students and professors which showcase engineering subjects, including civil, mechanical and chemical engineering – helping students discover engineering and science as real possible careers, definitely within reach.
