In January 2014, Congressman Joe Courtney put out a request for high school students in the Second Congressional District of Connecticut to participate in the first annual Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academic Competition, “The House STEM App Challenge.” This new competition is designed to engage student’s creativity and encourage participation in STEM education fields. This competition was a nationwide event that allowed students from across the country to compete by creating and exhibiting their software application, or “app,” for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice.

Bianca Timpano, from Waterford and a 2014 graduate of the Science & Technology Magnet High School in New London entered the competition as a result of her senior capstone project on physical therapy that she completed in Biomedical Innovation class. With the guidance from the Technology specialist for STMHS Bianca created an app called “Therapy Reminder”. This app was designed so that parents could continue physical therapy exercises with their children at home in between visits.

Monday, July 21st, 2014, Bianca was awarded 1st place for her app out of 13 applicants from the Second Congressional District by Congressman Courtney. Her app will be featured on the U.S. House of Representatives’ website (, as well as on display in a U.S. Capitol exhibit.
