In December there were an astounding 52 projects in all fields presented at the school level science fair at STMHS (nearly 100 kids involved in several classes).

These kids had mentors from every walk of life, including R&D labs at the Coast Guard Academy, UCONN Avery Point labs, our own faculty, and beyond. This is a true testament to the networks New London has developed.

We narrowed that field to 15 projects (22 kids) who showcased their work at Quinnipiac on Tuesday. From the field of nearly 150 projects in the Urban Challenge category, they narrowed the field to approximately 10 finalists based upon a scale of 1-3 (1 being outstanding). Until Tuesday, STMHS has never earned a 1. Last year we had two 2's and thirteen 3's.

On Wednesday, the team learned that we have five finalists (1's), four 2's and six 3's. The following students presented their research on Thursday at Quinnipiac during the finalist judging:

  • Kate Ashbey
  • Sylvia Guijarro-Sines
  • Tessa Rock
  • John Burnett and Austin Huang (team project)
  • Ethan Barnes and Nate Bland (team project)

From the finalists, judges will select an Urban Challenge State Champion to represent Connecticut and showcase their research at the Intel International Science Fair in Phoenix in May.
